Essaouira is a small town with a harbor at the Atlantic Ocean.
The port is a very important location for fishing. So the port every day is really busy with many fishing boats. The main part of these fishes are imported to Morrokos bigger cities like Agadir, Casablanca or Marrakech.
In the 11th century Yusuf ibn Taschfin, the founder of Marrakech, integrated the region around Essaouira in his empire. In 2025 Essaouira has round about 85.000 residents.
The name Essaouira means: the city wich is surrounded by a big wall. Today the wall around the city is in a very good condition with beautiful city-gates. Inside of this wall the Medina is located. Since 2001 the whole medina is a part of the Unesco World Heritage.
Essaouira also offers good beaches for watersport.
